Automatic wiper mode and frost

When starting your car in freezing temperatures, it is very important to make sure your car’s automatic wiper mode is turned off.

The automatic wiper mode function has appeared in cars for some time now and is extremely useful in everyday use. Its operation is based on a rain sensor located at the top of the windshield. It recognizes dirt on the glass and automatically starts the wipers, adjusting their work to the intensity of rainfall. At positive temperatures, this is a very useful function, but during frosts it can expose us to additional costs. Why?

When the wipers are activated when the windscreen is covered with a layer of frost or ice, the blades may become damaged as a result of sliding across the frozen surface, which will result in water being smeared across the windscreen.

Another possible scenario is that the wipers are frozen to the windshield. When the automatic mode is on, the rubber blades can be torn from their mounts, requiring the wipers to be replaced.

In the event of severe freezing of the wipers, it may happen that they will not move even when accidentally activated, causing damage to the wiper motor. Replacing this element can cost up to several hundred zlotys.

To prevent the above situations, remember to check after driving or before starting the engine whether the automatic wiper mode function has been turned off. This will allow you to avoid potential expenses related to replacing wipers and increase travel safety for all road users.
