Windshield Washer Fluid and Its Impact on Car Wipers

There are many different windshield washer fluids available in stores, designed to keep your windshield clean, ensure good visibility, and maintain the proper condition of your car’s wipers. Do you pay attention to the ingredients when choosing one?

Winter windshield washer fluid does not crystallize in sub-zero temperatures thanks to its alcohol content. The type of alcohol used is the most significant indicator of the fluid’s quality.

A 2021 regulation prohibits the sale of substances containing more than 3% methanol to consumers. Nevertheless, some fluids containing this ingredient are still available on the market. Methanol is highly harmful, not only to the rubber and plastic parts of wipers and the paint coating but also to human health, as it is highly toxic. When choosing a winter washer fluid, make sure it does not contain this type of alcohol.

Additionally, the fluid should have good cleaning properties and adequately lubricate the rubber wiper blades. Wiper blades are lubricated by ethylene glycol and glycerin present in the fluid. These substances help prevent blade damage, improve their glide, and reduce squeaking on the windshield surface. However, an excessive amount can lead to streak formation.
